The Darnall Medical Library (DML) is named after CAPT William L. Darnall Sr, DC USN. As a Lieutenant Commander, he served as Officer in Charge at National Naval Dental Center from Jul 1923 - Oct 1927. CAPT Darnall later served as Dental Officer in Command, Aug 1939 - Apr 1941.

The DML is the result of a merger between the Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) Library, the E.R. Stitt Library at National Naval Medical Center (NNMC), and the Darnall Dental Library, Naval Postgraduate Dental School (NPDS). In September of 2011, NNMC and WRAMC came together to form Walter Reed National Military Medical Center as decreed by the Base Realignment and Closure law of 2005. At that time, it was named the Darnall Biomedical Learning Resource Center (DBLRC), but was renamed to Darnall Medical Library (DML) in 2014.
