One of the primary missions of the Darnall Medical Library is to support the education and research needs of trainees within GME and the NPDS.

If you are outside of those areas and are pursuing advanced degrees, we say: Good for you! Librarians are firm believers in lifelong learning.

When tackling your research assignments, we highly recommend that you utilize the library resources provided by your university prior to contacting the Darnall Medical Library. Your university library has databases that we do not have, and your teachers have a better understanding of the intent of each assignment.

So let's say you've gotten a class assignment to summarize eight research articles, which meet the following criteria:
Original research studies, preferably published from 2010 to the present.
At least six of the eight studies should be quantitative
Two studies may be qualitative (but this is not a requirement).

We're happy to assist, but bear in mind our role is to support you in the learning process. Much of the work will rest on your shoulders.

Student Responsibilities
Identify research areas of interest;
Do preliminary searches in library databases;
Familiarize themselves with relevant and alternative terms;
Know how to identify a peer-reviewed journal;
Run the search;
Review the citations;
Select and retrieve articles;
Write the paper.

Librarian Support
Help student identify additional databases that may be of use;
Discuss search terms / aid in making the search broader or narrower.

If you are a student working on a class project related to your work here and the mission of WRNMMC, we're happy to consult with you, teach you how to formulate a PICO question, and develop a search strategy. Please reach out to us, or sign up for one of our regularly scheduled classes!
