Why are you throwing away books?
"Weeding or the deselection of material is critical to collection maintenance and involves the removal of resources from the collection. All materials are considered for weeding based on accuracy, currency, and relevancy. Space limitations, edition, format, physical condition, and number of copies are considered when evaluating physical materials." – American Library Association
We have offered these materials to Federal Libraries per Army Regulation 735–17 (pages 7 & 8), and the Handbook for Federal Librarianship  (pages 24 & 25). Some books are being shipped to other libraries, but then we reach out to Excess Property and they take them away.

Can I take a book?
These books are government property, even though they’ve been withdrawn from the library collection. If you could use a copy in your office or clinic, you may take it. These books are not for personal use or resale.

We have old editions in our clinic, can I drop them off here?
If there is a giant box outside of the library, then yes, you can drop off excess books. If you're bringing more than a dozen books, please speak to a member of the library staff. The box should NOT be filled to the top. You can also reach out to Excess Property in Logistics.

For more information on the process, see: What is the DML's Collection Weeding Process? How do I give you feedback?
